Where the $1,500 Per Door Number Comes From (and Why It's a Ghost)
The old number came from a specific place: hardware distributor price sheets circa 2019–2022. If you added up the retail price of one reader, one strike, one REX button, one door contact, and a share of a controller board, you landed around $1,200 to $1,800 in raw parts.
That hardware price sheet number circa 2022 was never a project price. It was a bill of materials price.

Here is an anonymized 11-door mixed-use retrofit example quote for a commercial property Columbia relative to rates for the first half of 2026. The owner had budgeted $27,500 based on the numbers Reddit gave him. The three quotes he received came in at $44,000, $49,500, and $55,000.
