Hikvision, one of our GenX Security Superior Brand partners, headquartered in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, recently announced that it achieved the U.S. Government Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 Level 1 certification, an encryption standard created by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
FIPS 140-2 establishes the Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) as a joint effort by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) for the Government of Canada. Hikvision's encryption module (HIKSSL) received Level 1 FIPS 140-2 certification to be used in both IP camera and NVR products.
FIPS 140-2 defines four levels of security. In brief, these levels are:
Level 1 is basic security level. An example of a Security Level 1 cryptographic module is a personal computer (PC) encryption board.
Security Level 2 applies to physical security mechanisms of a device to show evidence of tampering to prevent unauthorized physical access.
Security Level 3 goes a step further than basic physical security to prevent the intruder from gaining access to CSPs held within the cryptographic module. Level 3 could include strong enclosures and tamper-detection/response circuitry that blocks information when a device is compromised.
Security Level 4 provides the highest level of security and are most applicable for devices that are in harsh and unprotected physical environments. At Level 4, the physical security mechanisms provide a complete envelope of protection around the cryptographic module with the goal of detecting and responding to all unauthorized tampering attempts.
